N-myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG1) is a cytoplasmic protein that is ubiquitously expressed in tissues in response to cellular stress signals and cell growth-regulatory conditions. As a member of the NDRG gene family and, consequently, the α/β hydrolase superfamily, the NDRG1 gene encodes a 43 kDa protein that is involved in a variety of cellular stress response mechanisms, such as cellular differentiation, proliferation and growth arrest, neoplasia, tumor progression and metastasis, the hypoxia response, and DNA damage response.
