Synaptophysin is present in a variety of neuroendocrine cells, both normal and neoplastic, and may be a helpful tool for classifying small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC). Staining of Synaptophysin has also been noted in a fraction of non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC), known as NSCLC-NE.
